Charlotte Heath Crowned Champion Of The Fourth Edition Of La Sella Open
The Englishwoman holds off a late charge from Alessandra Fanali, who carded a superb -8 — the best round of the day
England’s Charlotte Heath has been crowned champion of the fourth edition of La Sella Open, a Ladies European Tour event held at La Sella Golf Resort in Dénia (Alicante), after the decisive third round was completed this Sunday.
Heath began the final round at the top of the leaderboard and withstood the pressure all day to close out the tournament, lifting the trophy at La Sella Golf Resort.
Italy’s Alessandra Fanali carded a superb -8 — the best round of the day — to finish as runner-up, though it wasn’t enough to catch Heath. England’s Alice Hewson completed the podium in third place. Among the Spanish players, the best placed was Ana Peláez, on -4.
“I was super nervous — I’ve been in that position before and not come out on the happy side of it, so I knew how it could go wrong. But today it didn’t,” said Heath. “My caddie Alex kept me really calm; we just stayed in our own little bubble and played golf, whatever the score was.” “It was a very unique situation — I didn’t play any golf yesterday, I just practiced, which is kind of strange.” “I’m definitely going to learn from this experience — I need tonight to sit with it, the things I did well and the things I didn’t,” she added.
Alex, Heath’s caddie, added: “I kind of knew with three to go that if we parred the last three we were probably going to be okay. Charlotte was world class all week — she said to me a few times that she was nervous, but I was a little bit nervous as well.” “It’s very easy if you’ve got a lead to think ‘oh, we can play safe from here’ — but then you actually put yourself in worse positions. She’s done all her homework throughout the whole week, and you just need to stick to that and keep it going. She did a great job of that today.” “I didn’t really tell Charlotte anything until after she chipped on the green — I just said, ‘you’ve got two putts to win.’ You don’t want to get the leaderboard too much in their head, because then they can overthink it a little.”
The fourth edition of La Sella Open was ultimately played over three rounds instead of the four originally scheduled, after the stoppages caused by Friday’s rain and Saturday morning’s electrical storm, as organisers decided in order to ensure the championship would be resolved with full guarantees for the players.
