Firemen Sign and Sing to Help Deaf Children

West Midlands Fire Service are signing and singing to help vulnerable deaf children.  Staff are taking part in sign2sing, a fundraising activity organised by the Deaf Health Charity SignHealth.   

They are learning a specially written song with accompanying signs and will be helping to raise funds to improve the lives of vulnerable deaf children in the UK and Uganda.

Alan Swift, Watch Commander, is leading the fire crews in learning the song. Alan has Level 3 in British Sign Language and other members of staff have also learned sign language to enable them to provide a better service to the deaf community.

Alan was joined by Crew Commander Joe Poynton and Firefighter Adrian Spencer in making a special film to promote sign2sing and encourage other members of the emergency services to take part.

Said Alan: “Taking part in sign2sing is great fun and an excellent way of raising awareness. I’d really encourage other people to join in. You’ll have a great time learning a valuable new skill while raising funds for a really worthwhile cause.”

Sign2sing 2016 takes place between 1-7 February. Schools, business, community choirs and other organisations take part. You don’t have to be an expert signer or a fantastic singer as all the resources you need to take provided, including video tutorials and musical backing tracks.
