Europe has inherited the US shopping spree “Black Friday”, “Cyber Monday”, and the altruistic/balancing pre-Christmas charitable, “Giving Tuesday”. Today National Philanthropic Trust UK (NPT-UK) advises people to be strategic in their charitable giving and predicts Europe will again follow US trends with record use of Donor Advised Funds (DAFs – charitable savings account) for 2016. Total grants from DAFs to charities reached a record $14.52 billion in the US in 2016*. DAF accounts now outnumber private foundations by three to one and are the fastest growing charitable giving vehicles – bar none.
John Canady, CEO of NPT-UK said: “We have been working hard to raise the profile of Donor Advised Funds which are relatively unknown here in Europe. The amount of philanthropic activity is on the rise in Europe and we are seeing more people being attracted to the DAF model to provide flexibility and control over their charitable giving.
“Since our 2014 launch, we have attracted over £10m and helped over 20 donors establish UK-based donor advised funds. Our ambition is to help raise the profile of donor-advised funds as charitable vehicles in UK and Europe so that we can make it easier for people to give money to charities globally. We want to make sure everyone understands that you don’t have to be a millionaire to have a strategic and organised charitable vehicle.”
Published annually by National Philanthropic Trust, the 2016 Donor-Advised Fund Report (https://www.nptrust.org/daf-report/) reveals DAF assets available for grantmaking grew to a new high of $78.64 billion. Donors’ contributions to DAFs also hit an all-time high of $22.26 billion.
