Square Mile magazine has published a list of the 100 most powerful people in the City. The ‘Square Mile Power 100 in association with Land Rover’ is a comprehensive run-down of the City’s power base – from young upstarts to its old guard.
Square Mile‘s editor Mark Hedley explains:
“This is the first year we’ve put together the Square Mile Power 100 – and it was a long and grueling process. To begin, we set some ground rules. Firstly, to qualify, you have to be working and living in Britain. The list is biased toward UK companies, too – especially banking. We were keen to cover a broad range of professions – from finance to law, PR to politics, accountancy to consultancy. There are those at the top of their respective trees already and many who are still on their way up. And it has been anchored in the perspective of the City – those who actually matter when it comes to its day-to-day running. Deciding on our final rankings caused a lot of heated arguments in our office, so I’m sure the final list will incite plenty of debate in the City.”
Included in the top ten are Stephen Hester, CEO of Royal Bank of Scotland, Alan Howard of Brevan Howard Asset Management and Martin Wheatley, CEO of the Financial Conduct Authority. Controversially, Michael Sherwood, co-chief exec at Goldman Sachs ranked higher than Prime Minister, David Cameron showing the influence of this investment banking giant on the financial landscape. The number one position, however, was awarded to the Governor of the Bank of England – “the key architect in Britain’s economic make-up” and quite a mantle for Mark Carney to live up to when he takes over the roll from Sir Mervyn King this June.
The Square Mile Power 100 is sponsored by Land Rover. Producing some of the most powerful cars on and off the road, the marque is a perfect partner for the list – not to mention the fact that half of the City seems to own a Range Rover.
