Veterinary professionals take an oath to benefit society first, then animals. But are they prepared to benefit an ever-diverse society of animal owners?
Kemba Marshall, a practicing veterinarian, has edited a book which explores the veterinary patient, client and care giver benefits of improved diversity, equity and inclusion in veterinary med.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Veterinary Medicine by Wiley Publishing (ISBN 978- 1394217083) will be released in March 2025. It will come as no surprise the number of pet owners there are in the United States.
What may come as a surprise however is the impact of poor diversity and inclusion efforts in this profession which has been labeled as the least diverse in the United States. This impacts the health of animals and the health of the veterinary profession
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Veterinary Medicine takes a broad approach to the concept of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), delivering a practical discussion of effective strategies for applying DEI practices within the veterinary setting.
Written by a diverse set of voices, the book provides a comprehensive understanding of DEI. Arranged from A to Z, the 26 chapters discuss important DEI concepts with actionable advice for how to incorporate DEI into the practice of veterinary medicine.
The chapters define the “what” or specific terms, explain the “now what” or why each concept is important to veterinary medicine, and conclude with the “now what” giving practical examples of how to apply the terms in the real world.
Each chapter stands on its own and can be approached individually but collectively these chapters boldly expand the boundaries of DEI into topics that are both familiar and novel.
This book is for those who work and live with or love animals.
