At least 46 children were massacred overnight after Israeli airstrikes blasted homes, tent shelters, schools, and hospital zones across the Gaza Strip, shattering a declared ceasefire and killing entire families in their sleep, according to Gaza health officials. More than 250 people were injured.
The strikes hit densely populated areas in central and southern Gaza, including encampments where displaced families had sought refuge from previous bombardments. Paramedics described “chaotic and horrific” scenes as they pulled the bodies of young children from the rubble.
In the southern Sabra neighbourhood of Gaza City, three women and a man were recovered from beneath the ruins of the al-Banna family home. In the Bureij refugee camp, five members of the Abu Sharar family were killed when their home was flattened. Neighbours said the explosion “shook the entire district.”
At Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, women wept around the bodies of Bayan al-Shawaf and her four children, killed when a missile struck a tent in the al-Mawasi displacement camp. Hospital workers said the children were still wearing pajamas.
“This was a massacre,” an exhausted emergency worker said. “Entire families were wiped out in seconds.”
Hospitals already operating beyond capacity treated patients in corridors, stairwells, and car parks as ambulances queued outside.
Israel claimed the strikes were retaliation for an alleged ceasefire violation by Hamas — a claim Hamas denied. No evidence linking the targeted structures to militants has been released. Human rights organizations warned the strikes violate the laws of armed conflict, noting the deliberate targeting of civilian infrastructure during a truce may constitute a war crime.

Gaza’s Government Media Office claimed 47 Israeli violations since the ceasefire began, resulting in 38 deaths and 143 injuries. The Guardian reported the figures. Israel disputes them.
19 October 2025 — Rafah explosion triggers escalation
On 19 October, Israeli forces reported an explosion in Rafah, killing an Israeli soldier and injuring others. Officials immediately declared the ceasefire broken.
Within 24 hours, journalists, regional outlets, and U.S. sources reported the blast was caused by an Israeli bulldozer running over unexploded ordnance (UXO) — not by a Hamas ambush.
Journalist Ryan Grim stated:
“Soon after the explosion in Rafah, the White House and Pentagon knew the incident was caused by an Israeli settler bulldozer running over unexploded ordnance — contradicting Netanyahu’s claim that Hamas had popped up from tunnels.”
Another source added:

Despite U.S. government assessments indicating an accidental detonation, Israeli leadership continued to attribute the incident to Hamas and used it to justify renewed strikes.
