juwi solar, a Colorado-based solar power company, has announced the completion of a project in Wyandot County, Ohio: the largest solar energy generation facility in operation there at 12-megawatts.

juwi solar Inc. (JSI) developed the project and performed all turnkey engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for the project.

During the course of construction, approximately 95% of the labor consisted of workers residing in the State of Ohio, many of whom gained valuable instruction from JSI and their first hands-on experience helping build a utility-scale solar project.

“We are proud to have developed and constructed the largest solar project to be commissioned in the State of Ohio to date and are encouraged by the motivated and professional efforts of leading offtakers such as AEP and sponsors like PSEG,” said Michael Martin, managing director of JSI.

“This project is the result of the commitment of the State of Ohio to promoting solar power generation and AEP’s leadership role in complying with the state’s renewable energy goals.”

As part of its development efforts, JSI also agreed to build solar PV systems for three high schools in Wyandot County in order to provide them with free, zero-emission electricity and to educate students about the technology used at the solar farm.

The project officially began generating renewable solar power on a commercial basis on May 26, 2010 for Columbus Southern Power and Ohio Power Company, operating companies of American Electric Power (AEP). AEP will buy all of the project’s output from PSEG Solar Source, the project’s owner, through a 20-year power purchase agreement. AEP will also receive all renewable energy credits from the project.

PSEG Solar Source is a subsidiary of PSEG, a Newark, NJ—based diversified energy company. PSEG acquired the ownership rights to the project from JSI in September 2009. JSI will operate and maintain the project during its initial years of operation.

“We are thankful to JSI for completing this project ahead of schedule,” said Diana Drysdale, vicepresident of PSEG Solar Source. “Renewable energy projects, like this one in Wyandot County, provide a tremendous boost to the construction industry and many local businesses.”

juwi solar Inc., based in Boulder, Colorado, is a developer and turnkey EPC contractor of solar power plants throughout North America. juwi solar’s main focus is the development, construction and operation of power plants 1 megawatt or larger. juwi solar is a majority-owned corporation of the German juwi group, which ranks among Europe’s leading renewable-energy companies.

juwi has installed more than 1,200 PV systems, with a total capacity in excess of 400 megawatts. By the end of 2010 juwi solar Inc. is scheduled to complete projects in Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, and Texas, totaling 44 megawatts of renewable energy.
