US ambassador admits strong case for India’s UNSC bid

The US yesterday admitted that India had a strong case for being included into the United Nations Security Council but remained non-commital about supporting the demand saying that its first priority was U N reforms.

“India’s case (for inclusion in the Security Council) is very strong. But our first priority is UN reform and to see that Security Council membership fits with the reform,” US ambassador to India David C Mulford said here.

Mulford was replying to questions after addressing members of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Indo-American Chamber of Commerce here.

Observing that his country was giving high-priority to the issue of UN reforms, Mulford said “in the US, there is great dissatisfaction about the role of the United Nations and cases of corruption in the world body which were not fully investigated.”

To a question, he said outsourcing was a natural fallout of development of technology and it could not be stopped merely by making laws. “What we need to do is to retrain people….(outsourcing) is a sensitive issue but not a central one.”
