Sports Journalism - 2006/02/03 17:38 HELP!

I am just about to finish my NCTJ Newspaper Journalism Course at City College Brighton and Hove and want to get into sports journalism.

However, job opportunities in this field seem to be so limited.

If anyone can help, if you know of any opportunities or work experience placements I would be grateful.

Re:Sports Journalism - 2006/02/07 22:36 Jason,

I would recommend doing the following:
1. Select several newspapers/websites you like best and where you want to do your work placement.
2. Ring them and ask to speak to the Sports desk.
3. A sports desk usually has a very nice secretary who will tell you exactly what you need to do to apply.

In a nutshell, don't beat around the bush. Make those phone calls. From experience, people on the other side of the phone line are genuinely nice. Just be wise with the timing of your call. Don't call before deadline, but 11am is generally a very good time for both dailies and weeklies.

I would recommend contacting news agencies specialising in sports news.
