pitching ideas - 2006/04/13 20:17 Hi,

Can anyone give me advice on how to go about pitching ideas to magazines? I figured sending your cv and a brieg paragraph outlining what your idea is. But would you write it as if it was the standfirst for the article or just summarise what the article would be about? Anyone with advice or their experiences would be great as I've got some ideas targeted for specific magazines, it's just a case of getting the contact right so it's not just deleted.

Thanks in advance.

Re:pitching ideas - 2006/05/04 01:30 Hi there,
I saw this on www.journalism.co.uk and thought it might answer some of your questions about pitching.

From my experience, you need to find out exactly what type of stories the newspaper/magazine publishes, then ring the office to find out who to send the idea to (best time to ring is between 10 and noon)and send them your idea (be sure to make it short and sweet).

Best,
Sveta

Re:pitching ideas - 2006/05/12 10:22 Hi!

The average query length is 1 page, 1 ½ if complex to explain. The usual format is 4 paragraphs. Briefly summarize your publishing credentials in the 3rd paragraph. Only phone the magazine for the section editor’s name if you can’t find it on the masthead. Don’t query directly over the phone. Check and make sure you know the magazine and what they’ve published recently. There are other factors to consider such as reading a few back copies of the publication. Study the advertisements and slant your style to the magazine’s particular readership. Be passionate about your subject. Interest the editor so he/she will keep reading and this should lead to a publishing credit (and hopefully payment) for you.
