Claudio Castelo, ‘Ladies and Gentlemen’, 80 x 100 cm, acrylic on linen canvas

Claudio Castelo, a Brazilian artist residing in Sao Paulo, Brazil, was advised early on that ‘painting is dead’ and the contemporary artist should turn to other, evolving mediums. Fortunately, he followed his own path, which led him to Paris, India, Nepal, and back to his beloved Brazil, where he’s been exhibiting with acclaim since the early 1980’s. Castelo takes his inspiration from literature, particularly works from Proust, Tolstoi, Henry James, and Flaubert; as well as Greek tragedies, opera, theatre and even his favourite director, Luchinoi Visconti.  His paintings are a visual transformation of his readings, his experiences and his travels.  His subjects remain true to the Belle Epoque era, yet they’re inflicted with Castelo’s signature of clean lines and a bold colour palette.

Tina Salvesen, ‘Shakti Rising’, detail, 172 x 101 cm, charcoal on paper

Tina Salvesen, a resident artist at the Bakehouse Art Complex in the Wynwood District of Miami, has exhibited widely including the State Museum of Pennsylvania and Shanghai Art Basel. She also held the honour of collaborating with Jacques Cousteau prior to his death, as the illustrator of The Cousteau World Almanac.

Salvesen is represented at the WTG Autumn Show with three distinct series. ‘Conversations with Myself’, a series of small works on wood panel which are a visual diary – one small painting for each day, reflecting the artists diverse and wide-ranging thought process. The Ceiba series, also mixed media on wood panel, which was inspired by the Ceiba tree of the ancient Maya of Central America. And, ‘Transitions’ (above image) which depicts unravelling knots, no longer recognizable as such; they’ve become something more abstract and indefinable. The stark black against white creates the definition rejected by the subject matter.

Jean Paul Mallozzi, ‘Secrets’

Mariano Molina,  ‘Rush’

Benjamin Hollingsworth, ‘Olympia’
